A puppy's first year is the most important window for building strong bones, muscles, and immunity. Getting nutrition right now shapes their health for the rest of their life.
Puppies need food formulated specifically for puppies, not adult dog food — it has higher protein and calories to match their rapid growth. Split meals into 4 small feedings a day.
Gradually reduce to 3 meals a day. This is the biggest bone-growth window, so a balanced calcium-to-phosphorus ratio matters a lot — especially for large breeds growing faster than average.
Move to two meals a day. This is a good time to start watching their weight, especially for large-breed puppies who can gain weight quickly.
Usually between 12-18 months, but it depends heavily on breed size — small breeds mature faster (around 1 year), while large breeds can take up to 18-24 months. Ask your vet if you're not sure.
Avoid switching food abruptly — always mix new food with the old gradually over a week to avoid stomach upset.
